Bertha Rides Again
Saturday, September 13, 2008
-
This past Saturday with  hard work and determination, the members of North Penn drove Bertha to Skippack Station 86 for the housing of their new station. Slow but steadily Bertha thundered her way through town getting lots of attention from onlookers both young and old. North Penn proudly brought home two second place trophies. Bertha received one for Antique Fire Apparatus. Squad 62 for Mid Size Rescue Pumper. Credit and appreciation goes out to our Engineers, and the Bertha committee members who worked hard to get her where she is. They have spent days & nights cleaning, fiddling, taking her apart and putting her back together  again to get her running just right. More work will be done in the future but for now Bertha is rolling along. Congratulations for a job well done.

62 Does it’s Part In Conshohocken
Monday, August 18, 2008
-
Wednesday evening, while members of North Penn sat in station, a fire started on Washington Street in Conshohocken Borough at their Millenium Condominiums. As 62 listened to the radio traffic of Conshohocken Fire Department and the stations arriving, they watched the scene grow from the TV. More 62 members began to arrive waiting to see if they would be called in. After being glued to their radios and the TV screen of the channel 6 news, Ladder 62 with a crew of 6 were sent to station 36 to cover their calls. From there 62’s Ladder crew watched the smoke and flames reach into the air. Another eager crew from North Penn was called in when Command called for LDH. Another crew of 6 climbed into Engine 62 and responded to their place in line of 5 inch hose. Shortly after while trying to decide how to get some cigars, Ladder 62 was sent to manpower. From there, the Ladder truck had a rough road of climbing over 5 inch with ramps made from cribbing, tight streets to maneuver through packed with cars, and rocky and muddy uneven pathways to where they finally got to their spot next to the fire building on the river side. The ladder chauffer set up the main for aerial water flow operations, while the rest of the crew secured the water supply. As time passed, members of the ladder crew took turns operating the aerial, hitting hot spots of the condos and extinguishing a majority of a floor of the original fire building from 75 feet in the air. After dropping their 5 inch in line and grabbing a bite to eat, the crew of Engine 62 packed up and went to work, searching floors of the remains of the condos; searching for people, pets, and extension of the fire. Tired from their work, Engine 62 rested their feet, and members of the Ladder crew and helping hands from station 83 packed the 5 inch back onto Engine 62. After getting the Engine back in service, both Engine and Ladder 62 were released from the scene and headed back home.

Thank you to everyone that came out that night and the following morning, and we are proud to be able to say that everyone went home alive.

LOCAL FRATERNITY OF AREA FIREFIGHTERS PLAN A FUNDRAISER FOR THE CROZER CHESTER BURN CENTER IN NORTH WALES AUGUST 14TH
Tuesday, August 5, 2008
-
On Thursday-August 14th, area firefighters who part of the fraternity in the Philadelphia region known as Fraternal Order of Leatherheads Society (aka: Metro-Fools) will be hosting a Fundraiser to be held at the Tex Mex Connection in North Wales, PA.  The outdoor fundraiser will run from 6pm to 11pm.  Following the outdoor fundraiser, the Tex Mex Connection is inviting all to continue the event indoors where they will have a DJ providing music til closing time.  We are asking a $20 donation at the door, which will go towards the Crozer-Chester  burn center.  That donation will include a free T-shirt for the first hundred people to walk through the door, food, a beverage and a night full of entertainment. The fundraiser will feature a live band, a performance from the Camden County Pipes and Drums and a DJ indoors.  Throughout the night there will be raffles with chances to win numerous prizes ranging from gift certificates to a traditional leather firefighting helmet.  There are prizes for firefighters to win and plenty of prizes for all of the non-firefighters in attendance.
We are excited to be able to have this opportunity to host this fundraiser for the Crozer Burn Center.  After firefighters pull a burn victim out of a fire, they may only see the victim make it as far as the ambulance.  Soon after that time the burn center takes over.  The Crozer Burn Center has facilities to assist burn victims with the immediate emergency care, rehabilitation, counseling and much more to help each individual victim get their life back on track.  The burn center is a non-profit organization which obtains most of its fund through fund-raising events.  We are proud to help Crozer by hosting this fundraiser and assisting them in carrying on their mission, especially at a time where they are expanding their facilities.  All of the members of the Philly Metro FOOLS look forward to the fun filled event on August 14th and making this an annual occasion so that we may continue our mission in helping others.
In August 2006 the Philadelphia Metro FOOLS were officially chartered.  We are a local chapter, part of the International FOOLS.  In 2007 we held our first meetings and began laying the foundation for the organization.  Since that time we have recruited over 50 members into our proud group.  This summer of 2008 marks a big year for the Philly Metro FOOLS.  June 28th we held our first training session at the Delaware County Emergency Services Training Center.  The training taught firefighters how to survive the intense stage of a fire known as a flashover.  August 14th will mark our first FOOLS fundraiser to help raise money to benefit the Crozer Burn Center.  We look to pave a long path ahead of us and continue to carry on the traditions of the fire service, promote brotherhood, offer training for firefighters, and contribute to worthy causes.
The Fraternal Order of Leatherheads Society (FOOLS) is an organization that was started in 1995 by a group of Central Florida Firemen. This group is known today as the “Founding Fools.” They have a passion for not only the camaraderie and brotherhood that is forged between firefighters, but the rich tradition and heritage of the Fire Service.  Since 1995, this brotherhood has grown to over seven thousand strong.  There are chapters all over the world, with new chapters starting almost every day.
The Leatherhead is a term used for a firefighter who uses the leather helmet for protection from the hazards we face everyday on the streets. The Leather Helmet is an international sign of a Firefighter, a symbol that is significant in not only tradition from the early years of firefighting, but one of bravery, integrity, honor and pride. The helmet is a sign of who we are, not what we are.

The FOOLS, like the traditional leather helmet, has always existed throughout the brotherhood of the Fire Service, and will continue to grow and flourish as long as there are fires to fight and emergencies to respond to. The FOOLS are about the brotherhood and tradition that the fire service is based on.
The FOOLS are not a political organization. We will not be involved in union, management, or any other political issue. We are about preserving the tradition and heritage of the fire service and taking care of our brother and sister firefighters. We plan on being involved with fundraisers, charity events, and helping disadvantaged children receive gifts for Christmas. We believe that this part of what being a member of the FOOLS is all about.
